December Fly Fishing 2016

December Fly Fishing action has been incredible. To say we have had the best season on record for December is an understatement! Good weather and stream conditions have contributed to great angler success rates for big trout. Bryson City, and Cherokee North Carolina have been at the top of the list for big fish locations to visit. Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge streams inside the Great Smoky Mountains National Park have seen their share of good fishing for wild trout.

Tuckasegee River Float Trips

Tuckasegee River Float Trips have been outstanding for consistent action and some massive trout. More season appropriate temperatures have turned the trout on big time as we’re seeing lots of massive Brook trout become very active. Cloudy days, even some rain have made for the best times to be out to catch a big fish! We are catching some very nice Brown trout now as well. The biggest December news on the Tuckasegee River has been fishing with dry flies! Yes you read that correctly, dry fly fishing in December. Crazy right!? All month long we have witnessed literally acres of rising fish on the Tuckasegee River starting mid morning and continuing all day until around 5:00pm. Hundreds of fish at times all on the surface sipping dries. It’s a been sight to behold.

December Fly Fishing, North Carolina Steelhead Fishing, Fly Fishing the Smokies

Rainy days on the Tuckasegee River have also seen some Steelhead running upstream from Fontana Lake. Stocked in the early 1970’s by the North Carolina Wildlife Resource commission, Steelhead just like those stocked into the Great Lakes thrive in the lakes and rivers in Bryson City. These hard fighting acrobatic fish will give you a fight like no other!

Cherokee Trophy Section, Great Smoky Mountains Fishing Report December 14th, Fly Fishing the Smokies

Cherokee Trophy Trout

December fly fishing on the Cherokee Trophy Section on the Raven Fork and Oconaluftee River is excellent. We are seeing good numbers of big fish hooked all month long. We’ve also seen lots of broken tippet and bent hooks! These big trout are notoriously hard fighters and will rip the guts out of a reel and have been known to break rods on many occasions. These aren’t the easiest fish to catch as they see some of the best anglers and flies on a daily basis. They will however leave a smile on your face that takes weeks to wipe off! Of course cloudy days and rain are best, but big fish can be caught on pretty days too.

A few more days are left in the month and we can’t wait to see what our guests will catch next!

Tight Lines y’all!

Great Smoky Mountains Fishing Report for December 15th

Bundle up today if you’re headed out! Expect day time highs to only be in the low 30’s today across the Great Smoky Mountains and surrounding towns of Gatlinburg and Bryson City. Overnight lows in the Smokies dipped into the teens on most higher elevation peaks. Thick fog in Bryson City was frozen to tree branches and porch steps this morning. I found this out the hard way as I bounced down them on my arse first thing this morning! Nonetheless, it’s going to be a great day. The NRS Clearwater drift boat is hooked up and I’m rolling out to hit the Tuckasegee River with a long time friend and client who can lay out casts with the best of them!

The Tuckasegee River has seen an abundance of Blue Winged Olive hatches along with numerous midges coming off around 9:30 am and continuing through the day until the sun starts to set. Rising trout all across the river is a very welcomed sight especially in December. Who would have thought we would be targeting rising fish with dry flies this time of year. Very cool indeed!

The Cherokee Trophy section on the Raven Fork is producing fish water temps have cooled a couple degrees pushing fish into deeper water and holding tight to the bottom. They will feed all day long they just won’t move very far to take your fly. An accurate cast and dead drift are key to fishing here this time of year.

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park has been cold in the mornings so an early start isn’t necessary right now. Sleeping in and eating a big breakfast and opting for an extra cup of coffee is a better way to start. Not much has been happening before 9:00am this week inside the park. Once the sun comes up and light hits the water you start noticing activity on the side pockets and calmer water first.

Hope you all have a great week and spend some time outdoors. We’ll see you on the water!

Great Smoky Mountains Fishing Report December 14th

The fishing in December has been very good all across the Smoky Mountains region. Big Fish love cold weather! That is a fact. No other time of the year do we see more active big fish than in winter time. Although it’s not technically winter yet, tell that to the fish! The best fishing in the region at this time is the Tuckasegee River. Currently there are 17,000 trout per mile on the Tuckasegee. This River holds Rainbow, Brown, and Brook trout with average trout size around 16-18 inches! We are catching many fish into the mid 20 inch and beyond range. The recent deluge of much needed rain has done wonders for the water levels in the Tuckasegee River and surrounding tributaries. We are seeing full streams and rivers with great water clarity. This makes perfect conditions for both Wade and Float Trips this winter. Great Smoky Mountains Fishing Report December 14th, Fly Fishing the Smokies   The Cherokee Trophy Section is the second choice for fantastic fishing this time of year. The Raven Fork and Oconaluftee River are both fishing very good. Trout here are monsterous with many fish exceeding 24 inches and better. We are seeing good action on both dries, nymphs, and streamers on the Trophy Section. Water levels are dang near perfect right now. Honestly you couldn’t ask for much better. We are still seeing the Elk wander through the area as well rounding out a fun filled day! Great Smoky Mountains Fishing Report December 14th, Fly Fishing the Smokies The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is fishing good for December. Brown trout are finally becoming very active on the larger low elevation streams such as Little River, Deep Creek, and the Oconaluftee River. We’re seeing dependable hatches on Blue Winged Olives and several small Caddis species around mid morning as the sun warms things up a bit.

The weather this week has been chilly to down right cold in the mornings which is typical this time of year. Tuesday was off and on rain showers and stayed overcast which triggered some epic fishing! Wednesday was clear and cool with a sun all day with highs reaching mid 40’s. Thursday is going to be clear and cold with a high of only 33 degrees. Brrr! Friday clouds up and starts to warm and by Saturday and Sunday we are forecasted for rain showers and high reaching the mid fifties. Should be some great weather for catching big fish!

Faith, Family, and Fishing! We’ll see you on the water.

Winter Fly Fishing equals Big Trout

Its been said that big fish love cold weather. This certainly seems to be true here in the Smoky Mountains region. Winter is when we start to see the biggest fish brought to the nets. While technically its not close to Winter here yet, recent temprature changes would have you thinking otherwise!

Winter Fly Fishing equals Big Trout, Fly Fishing the Smokies

Fly Fishing in Winter

The NC side of the Smoky Mountains has miles of perfect trout filled water. Starting with the Tuckasegee River, which has a state managed Delayed Harvest section. The “Tuck” is loaded to the max with Brook, Brown, and Rainbow Trout. Catching Grand Slam of all three species is a big possibility! The Tuckasegee River is a wide sprawling Rocky mountain sized tailwater river making trout fishing very near perfect here. During the winter months you can expect around 17,000 trout per mile! We offer both Wade Trips and Float Trips on this amazing river.

The hottest destination in the Smoky Mountains region is the Raven Fork! Cherokee is home to some awesome fly fishing opportunities, and this time of year we see incredible action. Fishing the Raven Fork is a unique experience offering world class angling for trophy trout while enjoying great stream access and wading in one of the most beautiful settings in the Smoky Mountains. If all of this isn’t enough to convince you, then imagine standing in the river making the perfect cast and having an audience of Elk watch as you fish!

Elk in the Great Smoky Mountains, Winter Fly Fishing equals Big Trout

Winter in the Smoky Mountains is normally a mild affair, with day time temperatures reaching the mid 50’s-60’s. December and January are both normally mild and have pleasant mid day temperatures perfect for getting outside for a Wade Trip for Trophy Trout. February is historically our coldest month and is best spent fishing from the Drift Boats on the Tuckasegee River instead of wading.

Check out our Winter Specials for some great options for fishing the Smoky Mountainns region in search of big trout!

Great Smoky Mountains Fishing Report October 31st

Great Smoky Mountains Fishing Report October 31st, Fly Fishing the Smokies, Trout Fishing Guides Smoky Mountains, Smoky Mountain Fly Fishing,Great Smoky Mountains Fishing Report October 31st

Happy Halloween y’all!

October has whizzed by in a hurry this year. Where did the time go?? By far October is my favorite month of year for various reasons, and it’s going to leave me a tad bit sad to have to say goodbye until next year. I’ll certainly be savoring the last bit of Fall colors around the Smoky Mountains. My saving grace is the great fly fishing will still be here long past the foliage!

The Great Smoky Mountains fishing has been fantastic this past week. Dry fly action continues to be epic if you’re throwing the right stuff. We spent this past weekend fishing mid elevation streams and catching wild Bows and Browns with a combination of October Caddis, BWO Comparadunns, and Beetle patterns. There is a good subsurface bite as well with BWO nymphs and emergers, along with Ocotober Caddis pupae.

The weather in the Smoky Mountains has been very warm to almost hot. We have seen some record setting highs with nightly lows dropping into the lows 40’s in the valley floors and down to freezing in the back country and high elevations. Rain has been scarce but that is supposed to change on Thursday. We are forecasted for an 80% chance with totals that may help with the low water levels we have seen this season. The rain will certainly make the fishing even better!

Fall colors are beautiful in mid to low elevations now. This past weekend was the peak of elevations between 4,000 to 2,000ft. We still have plenty of green leaves waiting to turn in the lower elevations around Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. Those leaves should be in peak by the weekend. Traffic shouldn’t be no where near the bumper to bumper stuff we saw over the weekend. You should still expect some delays around Cade’s Cove and the Gatlinburg Bypass.

It should be a great week for fishing inside the park. With the Fall rush coming to a close we will see less people on the streams and on the roads for the next few weeks. November is always good fishing and often an overlooked time to be here. Have a great week and we’ll see you on the water!

Great Smoky Mountains Fishing Report October 23rd

The Smoky Mountains have had some crazy weather changes over the past few days. On Thursday we set a record for highs at 83 degrees in Bryson City and tied the record in Gatlinburg! Wow, for Ocotber that’s crazy right? Well.. Not so fast. On Friday tempratures dropped dramatically, and by nightfall we had snow falling on high elevation peaks such as Clingmans Dome and Mt. LeConte! Lower elevations recieved some much need rain on Friday, while not enough to raise water levels much it was enough to knock the dust down as they say! On Saturday the high struggeled in the valleys to get above 47 and the winds blew hard all day making it feel colder than it actually was. High elevations were barely making it above freezing by noon and snow still fell on Clingmans Dome forcing the park service to close the Dome road. Hours later the road reopened for visitors to catch and glimpse of the first snow of the season. High winds lasted until after dark clearing the skies for some dramatic long range evening views and sunsets in the Smokies. This morning there was frost on the pumpkins all across the Smoky Mountains. Today’s high is 61 in Bryson City and 67 in Gatlinburg. It’s sunny and for all purposes a beautiful day and perfect weather for being outside.

Mt. LeConte Lodge

The fishing has been great over the weekend. The cold blast did nothing to damper the fishing or the bite. Trout love cold weather! The Smokies streams fished well all weekend long and produced a consistent bite all day until the sun started to set. Dry fly action on the Smokies streams is still good. October Caddis, Blue Winged Olives, Cinammon Caddis, and Beetles are still producing good numbers of strikes and fish to the net.

Great Smoky Mountains Fishing Repoort October 23rd, Fly Fishing the Smokies, Tuckasegee River Fishing Guides,

The Tuckasegee River has been fishing very good in North Carolina. Duke Energy has started releasing some more water down the streams and the fishing has been consistent all day long. We’re seeing great hatches on some stretches of the Tuckasegee River including several varieties of Caddis, tiny BWO’s, and lots of micro mayflies and tons of midges. Stone fly hatches have been great too at certain times.

This week the weather will improve to mid 70’s across the region with nightly lows dropping into the low to mid 40’s most of the week. There is a good chance of rain on Thursday which has us crossing our fingers!

Fall colors have been beautiful this past week, and we have more yet to come. Much more in lower elevations! The high winds over the weekend stripped some turned and dying leaves off trees on windward facing slopes, opening views up for the bright reds and oranges of the oaks and other hardwoods that have yet to turn. All experts say this weekend will be very good for mid to low elevation colors!

Great Smoky Mountains Fishing Report October 19th

Fly Fishing the Smokies, Great Smoky Mountains Fishing Report October 19th,

Great Smoky Mountains Fishing Report October 19th

The fishing inside the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is fantastic this time of year! Trout are biting well and coming up top for good dry fly action starting mid morning until mid afternoon. Nymph bite has been consistent all day starting around 7:30am and continuing until late afternoon as the sun starts to set.

Hot patterns have been Ocotober Caddis, Black ants, Beetles, Pheasant Tail nymphs, Caddis Pupae, Stonefly nymphs, and Black Wooly Buggers.

We are starting to see some pre-spawn Brown Trout on certain streams throughout the Tennessee and North Carolina sides of the Smokies. These big fish start showing themselves a little more this time of year as they prepare to get ready for spawning season. They will be in the shallows feeding all day long on anything big and meaty that comes drifting by. Knowing what streams these fish will be prevalent on and where to look is key. Several factors contribute to success when fishing for these larger willy trout. Local knowledge that comes from a lifetime of fishing the Smoky Mountains along with air tempratures, water temperatures, moon phases and water flow also contribute heavily into the equation.

Weather this week has felt more late Summer-ish as day time highs have reached near 80’s in some valley floors. Nightly lows have been upper 50’s in Gatlinburg and Bryson City. That all changes this weekend as a cold front passes through and with it brings the prospect of rain on Friday and cooler tempratures to the area. This is will be a great weekend to be fly fishing the National Park and surrounding region.

The drop in tempratures and the rain will trigger the fish into biting even better. Rain will wash plenty of inch worms, ants, and beetles of backside vegetation into the water and we’ll see an increase in feeding activity. Catching those elusive Brown trout will get even better on Friday and Saturday.

Fall colors are exploding all across the Smoky Mountains. High and mid elevations are seeing the best colors as red and yellows are dominating the landscape. Expect heavy traffic congestion inside the Smokies and along the Blue Ridge Parkway as this will be as close to “peak weekend” as we are going to get.

We hope you have a great week and get outside and explore the Smoky Mountains

Faith, Family, and Fishing!

Great Smoky Mountains Fishing Report 10/14/16

Fly Fishing the Smokies, Tuckasegee River, Great Smoky Mountains Fishing Report 10/14/16,

Great Smoky Mountains Fishing Report 10/14/16

Great Smoky Mountains Fishing report for 10/14/16 – The fishing across the Smoky Mountains and surrounding region is fantastic right now! Cooler than normal temperatures have brought water temps down and have really increased trout activity. It’s kind of hard to get used to but we see huge swings in temps and weather here in the Smokies. We have a saying here: If you don’t like the weather, just wait 15 minutes! Lol!

This week it’s a toss up of where the best fishing is at:

On one hand you have the Tuckasegee River, which is loaded with stocked Rainbow, Brown, and Brook trout. These fish average between 12-28 inches and are very aggressive right now. We are seeing lots of fish put in the nets. This is a great choice for newcomers to fly fishing.

On the other hand you have the Great Smoky Mountains National Park which is absolutely on fire with fantastic dry fly action for wild Rainbow, Brown, and Brook trout. The difference is the trout in the Smokies are wild and not stocked and certainly won’t be that big, however they are absolutely gorgeous fish. The prettiest trout, and prettiest streams we have in the entire region are in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

The hottest flies this week in the park have been October Caddis dries, Dark Stonefly nymphs, Beetle dry flies, Cinnamon Caddis, Orange Stimulators, and Pheasant Tail nymphs.

There’s been a little frost on the pumpkins this week in the high country of the Smoky Mountains. Places such as Mt Leconte, Mt Guyot, and Clingmans Dome have seen some frost and cold temps. The valleys of Gatlinnburg and Bryson City have been hovering around 40 in the mornings and warming nicely during the day to mid to low 70’s. We are going to warmer for the weekend, morning lows will be in the low 50’s and highs reaching mid to upper 70’s. It’s shaping up to be a gorgeous weekend!

Great Smoky Mountains Fishing Report 10/14/16, Fly Fishing the Smokies, Caramel Apples, Gatlinburg Trout Fishign Guides,

Fall is certainly around us and the mountains are a buzz with people enjoying the sights and smells of the Smoky Mountains. A stroll down the streets of Gatlinburg offer a treat for the senses. The smell of fresh Caramel Apples from Kilwins and Ole Smoky Candy Kitchen is hard to resist. Spiced Apple cider is also easy to find this time of year. If that doesn’t get you, the sounds of bluegrass played by musicians along the streets will certainly remind you that you are in the Appalachia in the Fall. Colors are really starting to pop in the medium to high elevations. Newfound Gap and Clingmans Dome offer those looking for a nice drive some incredible views. For those who like, us are more adventurous, a hike up the Cimney Tops or out to Charlie’s Bunion offers some of the most dramatic views in the park.

Expect heavy traffic all across the region, as this weekend is typically the one associated as being the peak for leaf colors. While this is certainly not going to the case, we expect the peak colors are still a week and a half away. There will be heavy traffic across the park and especially around Gatinburg and Pigeon Forge.

Hope y’all have a great week, we’ll see you on the water!

Faith, Family, and Fishing
