Why Fall Is Such a Great Time to Fly Fish the Smokies
September begins the transition out of summer. Kids are back in school, vacation crowds begin to thin and the mountains become noticeably quieter. Cooler nights start dropping water temperatures, and trout become increasingly active.
Then October arrives.
Fall color begins spreading across the mountains while cooler water creates excellent conditions on both wild trout streams and larger stocked rivers. October also marks the return of Delayed Harvest trout fishing in North Carolina.
By November, leaves are dropping, crowds are disappearing and brown trout activity becomes one of the highlights of the season.
There really isn’t a bad month to be here during fall.
Fall Fly Fishing in Great Smoky Mountains National Park
Great Smoky Mountains National Park offers hundreds of miles of beautiful wild trout water, and fall is one of our favorite seasons to fish it.
Rainbow and brown trout inhabit streams throughout the park, while native Southern Appalachian brook trout can be found in higher-elevation waters.
Cooler fall temperatures make wade fishing comfortable, and decreasing visitor traffic means many streams become noticeably quieter than during summer.
From easily accessible roadside water to remote backcountry streams, we can tailor a guided trip around your experience level and the kind of fishing you want to do.
The Smokies are also an excellent place to learn how to fly fish. Our guides provide the equipment and instruction, so beginners can concentrate on learning and enjoying the day.
October Trout Fishing on the Tuckasegee River
October marks one of the biggest changes of the fall fishing season near Bryson City.
North Carolina’s Delayed Harvest season returns and the Tuckasegee River once again becomes one of the premier trout fisheries in the region.
Rainbow, brown and brook trout are stocked throughout the Delayed Harvest section, creating excellent opportunities for both experienced anglers and people learning to fly fish.
The Tuckasegee is a big river by Southern Appalachian standards and offers a completely different experience from the smaller mountain streams inside Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
We offer guided wade trips on the Tuckasegee during the fall, with our guided float-trip season returning later in the season.
November Means Big Trout
November is one of the most overlooked—and exciting—months of the fall.
Brown trout become increasingly aggressive around the spawning season, and some of the biggest trout opportunities of the year begin developing.
Large brown trout from Fontana Lake also begin moving into the Tuckasegee River during the late fall and early winter period.
Meanwhile, cooler weather and fewer visitors make November an excellent time to fish Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
If catching a bigger trout is high on your list, don’t overlook late fall.
