Summer Fly Fishing in the Great Smoky Mountains
Summer brings some of the most exciting fly fishing of the year to the Great Smoky Mountains. As the season progresses, trout feed heavily on a variety of aquatic insects along with terrestrials such as beetles, ants and inchworms that fall from the streamside vegetation. Dry flies are a favorite during the summer months, offering anglers the chance to watch wild trout rise and take a fly on the surface.
Water levels are typically lower and clearer during summer, making stealth, presentation and reading the water especially important. Our guides concentrate on productive pocket water, riffles, plunge pools and shaded runs where wild rainbow, brown and native brook trout find cold, oxygen-rich water. For anglers who enjoy wading mountain streams and catching wild trout in a beautiful setting, summer is an outstanding time to fly fish the Smokies.

Wild Rainbow, Brown and Brook Trout Fishing
The streams of the Great Smoky Mountains are home to three species of wild trout—rainbow, brown and native Southern Appalachian brook trout. Unlike stocked-water fisheries, trout in Great Smoky Mountains National Park are naturally reproducing wild fish that spend their entire lives in these mountain streams. Every fish is earned, and that’s part of what makes catching a Smoky Mountain trout so rewarding.
Rainbow trout are the most commonly encountered fish on many of the streams we guide, while brown trout offer anglers the opportunity to pursue larger, more elusive fish. Higher-elevation streams are home to native brook trout, the only trout species native to the Southern Appalachians. From small pocket water to deep pools and larger mountain streams, each species and each piece of water provides a different fly fishing experience.
